A Fun Field Trip

After spending a couple of weeks without doing any traveling, I decided it was time to do some archaeological exploration. Into my belly, that is. So I called the local EMTs and had them take me to the Emergency Room, where I requested an ultrasound of my abdomen to see what's really going on inside of me. And it turns out, there's stones in there! Gallstones.

Oh, yeah. Did I mention that this desire to learn more about me was prompted by intense abdominal pain that woke me up in the middle of the night?

The internet compares the pain of a gallstone attack to pains one experiences during labor. I don't have any real basis for comparison, but I can't imagine that it would have been any more painful to grow a vagina and give birth to a baby. Maybe twins would have been too much. I know I'd have trouble with three or more children, but I digress...

I have an appointment tomorrow to talk to a surgeon about having my gallbladder removed. Since I'm going to Africa over the summer and want to avoid the possibility of needing emergency surgery while I'm there, I figure I'll try and schedule the operation so that it's as soon after spring break as possible. Because I can't imagine many things that would be more miserable than skipping the trip I have planned over spring break to see several very close friends, so that I can have have surgery and sit on my couch for a week. Not fun. Hopefully the surgeon isn't so busy that we he can't schedule it then (with enough recovery time before Africa).

Anywho, I'll keep you all updated on the situation. Think happy thoughts!

Well, holy crap! I'm so sorry, IH! I know the horrid pain of those nasty gallstones because Rick had major attacks that sent him rocketing off the bed one night. He ended up sans gallbladder. Good luck, and I hope you can get it sandwiched in between travel plans. Knowing you, it'll happen perfectly!

That's awful! I hope you can get it all figured out and not have to miss out on your trips! Good luck, and feel better!
